One of Liverpool’s old targets could be available for nothing after Gelson Martins and a number of other Sporting Lisbon players terminated their contracts.

The BBC reports that four Portugal players from the World Cup squad, William Carvalho, Rui Patricio, Bruno Fernandes and Martins have terminated their contracts while Ruben Ribeiro, Bas Dost and Daniel Podence are leaving the Portugal giants.

This comes after a group of 50 fans had attacked the players during a training session and striker Bas Dost had suffered head injuries. The Liverpool Echo claims that Martins was linked to us in the past and that it would make sense for us to go for the Portugal international now. Martins is only 23 years old and contributed 8 goals and 8 assists for the side in 31 league games.

The attacker mostly plays down the right but can take up a central role too, so he could be used in a number of positions by Jurgen Klopp ahead of the season.

It really is a no-brainer as to whether we should sign the player or not. Martins is young, has talent and can be a really good signing given that we have not been able to sign Nabil Fekir due to an issue with his medical.

There is no doubt that some other clubs would be interested in the 23-year-old but if we move fast, we might have one of the steals of the season.
