Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo addressed that he is “aware” of what his critics say and things he needs to improve
Liverpool star Cody Gakpo acknowledged that there are things that he needs to improve while accepting that he is “aware” of criticism. Gakpo faced backlash from many fans and pundits after his poor performance during the FA Cup loss against Manchester United.
However, fatigue played the biggest role in Liverpool’s loss as they conceded two goals in the last 15 minutes. Liverpool have continuously played in every midweek since February and the game involved their second extra-time fixture within one month.
The Reds are still battling for two trophies as they challenge Manchester City and Arsenal for the Premier League title. They will play Atalanta two-leg quarter-final matches with the intention to progress in the Europa League competitions.
Cody told Voetbal International (h/t Liverpool Echo) that he is “aware” of the noise surrounding his recent performances for Liverpool. He said:
“I personally wasn’t that concerned. I am aware of the situations that have occurred and that are occurring and the expectations. I am someone who always looks at, what can I do better and how can I develop myself? That is still the case today. There are things that are going well and things that are not going so well that I have to develop that can be developed and I am fully engaged in that, and I am not really concerned with whether that transition has been successful anymore.”
The Dutch forward is below several forwards in the pecking order but his versatility allows him to get enough game time. Gakpo has played in several positions for the Reds this season and at times his versatility has been his adversary.
The 24-year-old’s critics question his best position claiming that he is the jack of all trades but a master of none. Nevertheless, Gakpo has made 42 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this season, contributing with 13 goals and five assists.
The Dutch international received more game time due to the injury crisis that has taken out several key players. Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez are the attackers that are above him in the pecking order.
Nevertheless, Gakpo has the quality to stay in contention for the first-team action even if all the players are available. We think the 24-year-old deserves some of the criticism as he has gone missing in games despite his immense talents.

Furthermore, arguments about his lack of pace compared to other attackers are justifiable despite the deceptive pace he possesses. Gakpo has not applied his abilities consistently which only invites further disapproval from many critics that have been vocal recently. Despite his critics, majority of the fanbase realise his massive potential and back the Dutchman to rectify his form.
