Daniel Sturridge talks about the contract situation of Liverpool VC Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool have received some valuable advice from former striker Daniel Sturridge, who believes that securing new deals for Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold should be the club’s top priority this summer.
Salah and Alexander-Arnold played pivotal roles in Liverpool’s recent triumph over Tottenham, with Salah finding the back of the net early in the game. However, Sturridge brought attention to the importance of focusing on the lad’s contract situation, particularly given Trent’s exceptional performances despite facing injury setbacks this season.
As the vice-captain’s current contract enters its final year [Transfermarkt], Sturridge stressed the need for Liverpool to act swiftly in securing his long-term future at the club. He highlighted TAA’s significance, not just as a talented player, but as a local lad who embodies the spirit of Liverpool.
Here is what Studge told ECHO:
“You can’t lose a man of Trent, you know, he’s from the city. You’re talking guys like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who have represented one club and and I think that’s what you kind of want for Trent.
“Of course, Mo [Salah] and Virg [Van Dijk], they’re guys that, you know, they’ve brought in. They’ve been absolutely world class for the football club. But the local lad in Trent who’s become a superstar at the football club, he’s the one that you want to make sure.”
Sturridge pointed out that Alexander-Arnold’s roots in the city, coupled with his meteoric rise to stardom at Liverpool, make him a player worth retaining at all costs. Drawing parallels with club legends like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, Sturridge talked about the importance of having players like Alexander-Arnold who represent the club’s ethos and values.
While acknowledging the contributions of Salah and Virgil van Dijk, Sturridge underlined that Alexander-Arnold’s status as a homegrown talent sets him apart and makes him a priority for contract renewal.
The statistics just make the case much stronger. Liverpool-born and bred Trent has scored 19 goals and has 81 assists in 308 appearances across all competitions for his boyhood club. Liverpool certainly need to do everything in their power to ensure that Alexander-Arnold remains a cornerstone of the team for years to come.
