Championship giants could sign outgoing Liverpool star if they win at Wembley this Sunday
As reported by Team Talk, Championship side, Southampton could end up giving outgoing Liverpool star, Joel Matip a new lease on life this summer. After eight years at the club the 32-year-old defender will be departing to take on a new challenge this summer.
However, he might not even shape to leave England cause there are a number of clubs lining up for him. Bournemouth are said to be interested in the Cameroonian on a one-year deal which could be extended if Matip manages to stay fit.
There is also some interest from the Bundesliga so the 32-year-old can head over to Germany as well. However, if Southampton are able to win the Championship play-off finals this Sunday, Matip might not have to go anywhere at all.
Southampton will be taking on Leeds United and their entire season rests on the outcome of this fixture. A win will earn the team a promotion to the Premier League and if that happens the soon-to-be former Liverpool defender could end up being their first signing.
The Saints look like the stronger team going into the fixture, within their last five games against Leeds, Southampton has only lost one game and have won two. There have also been a total of 14 games between the two during their last five matchups so we should be in for a spectacle.
While Matip is leaving Liverpool on a poor note, he will always be celebrated for his contributions during the Jurgen Klopp era. The Reds will be extremely happy with how things turned out considering they signed the 32-year-old on a free transfer back in 2016.
