Liverpool are keen on signing Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt
Liverpool are looking to bolster their defensive lineup this summer, and reports from TBR Football (h/t Liverpool Echo) suggest that the Reds are targeting Dutch international defender Matthijs de Ligt.
The 24-year-old central defender is reportedly frustrated at Bayern Munich and is open to leaving the club. De Ligt, who signed a contract worth about £70 million to join Bayern Munich in 2022, will not come cheap. However, he is in favor of the opportunity to play in the Premier League, having already experienced Serie A with Juventus and the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.
If Liverpool can secure his signing, De Ligt would be a significant addition to their defensive unit. His presence alongside Virgil van Dijk could form a formidable central defensive partnership, enhancing the team’s solidity at the back. The move would also align with Arne Slot’s plans to strengthen the squad and make Liverpool competitive on all fronts.
With Joel Matip departing the team on a free transfer, Matthijs de Ligt could be the perfect replacement for Liverpool. The 24-year-old Dutch defender would add much-needed strength to Liverpool’s backline, an area they need to bolster to be competitive for major trophies.
Since joining Bayern Munich two seasons ago, de Ligt has made 73 appearances, scoring five crucial goals and providing two assists. He has firmly established himself as a key part of their squad, showcasing his defensive prowess and leadership qualities.
Liverpool’s defense appeared vulnerable last season, and strengthening this area is crucial for their ambitions. However, acquiring de Ligt won’t be easy, as several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Arsenal, are also interested in the 24-year-old.
A few years ago, De Ligt regarded as a top-tier talent. It will be intriguing to watch if he can continue to grow and reach his full potential on an elite stage like the Premier League in the upcoming seasons.
