Former Arsenal fullback Bacary Sagna shared his doubt about Liverpool competing for the Premier League under Arne Slot next season
Bacary Sagna highlighted the reason for his scepticism about Liverpool competing for the Premier League under Arne Slot next season. The former Manchester City player believes that the transition period to implement a new tactical style would require a significant time.
Slot has replaced beloved manager Jurgen Klopp and inherited an impressive squad alongside the potential of new signings this summer. The 45-year-old has similar philosophy that he used at his former club Feyenoord which Klopp installed at Liverpool to succeed.
The Reds have always operated under a restricted budget, balancing the development of youth from the academy with their huge ambitions. Liverpool’s hierarchy thoroughly assessed the managers and pinpointed Slot because of this shared philosophy and capability to thrive under restrictions.
However, the former Feyenoord manager has a vastly different tactical style compared to the one Klopp used over the years. Slot prefers a possessional football with more emphasis on build-up and calmness in attack than a direct style like Klopp’s.
The Dutchman uses less counterattacking method compared to Klopp as well and the situation could benefit certain players Liverpool have. At the same time, Slot and Klopp have vastly similar high-pressing and highly energetic approach which benefits the new coach.
Speaking to Paddy Power (via Liverpool Echo), Sagna highlighted the tactical style from Slot which could require time to implement. He said:
“It might be difficult for Arne Slot to come in and make an impact at Liverpool. He’ll have to impose his rules and style of play, and of course get to know the players. Liverpool are Liverpool – I expect them to be solid and qualify for the Champions League. It’s hard to see them as champions next season– they will be able to play well at Anfield, and they have good experience and good players. Arne Slot will have to build up the team, and it might take time for him to have an impact on the game.”
Many naysayers doubted Klopp and Liverpool last season when the Reds made several changes in the squad. Liverpool enjoyed a successful and entertaining campaign despite the anticlimactic end to it due to certain vulnerabilities and extraneous factors.

While Liverpool fans are cautious and patient with their new head coach, it is tough to predict how things will proceed next season. Liverpool players should adapt quickly to Slot’s style as his philosophy is similar to Klopp which helps.
