Liverpool star Darwin Nunez wanted by Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho

According to a report from Turkish outlet Ajansspor, new Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho is plotting a shock summer swoop for Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.

The Merseyside giants broke their transfer record when they signed Darwin Nunez from SL Benfica in an £85 million deal in 2022, but he hasn’t entirely convinced during his two seasons in English football. The Uruguay international has netted 33 goals and registered 17 assists in 96 appearances in all competitions, including 18 goals and 13 assists in 54 outings during the 2023/24 campaign.

The 25-year-old achieved better goal contributions than his debut season but he was guilty of missing several gilt-edged chances in front of goal as Liverpool fell away in the Premier League title race. Now the aforementioned report claims that Jose Mourinho and his agent Jorge Mendes are eyeing Nunez on a season-long loan to replace Michy Batshuayi, who has shocked Turkey by leaving Fenerbahce to join arch-rivals Galatasaray.

Fenerbahce have started negotiations over a potential transfer for the Uruguayan star as they look to add him to their squad on loan for the 2024/25 season after missing the Super Lig title to Galatasaray by just three points last season.

Jose Mourinho and super-agent Jorge Mendes are leading the negotiations for the South American striker, who deleted all of his Liverpool-related Instagram posts at the end of last season amid intense criticism for missing several chances. Interestingly, Nunez is represented by Gestifute—a Portuguese founded by Jorge Mendes.

With the report suggesting that the striker could be unhappy at Anfield, the Istanbul-based club are trying to lure Nunez to Turkey after two hot and cold seasons in England. However, we feel Fenerbahce have little chance of signing Nunez—either on loan or permanently—this year.

The Reds splashed a lot of money to sign Nunez two summers ago, and while he has been profligate in front of goal, he is still a highly effective attacker who is a real handful for defenders due to his energy, intensity, pressing, pace and physicality. With his work rate and non-stop running, the Uruguay international brings a lot of value to the Liverpool side and makes space for the likes of Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota to thrive.

The 25-year-old, who is currently starring for his nation with two goals in three games at Copa America, has the required tools to thrive under new manager Arne Slot. So, we feel the Nunez to Fenerbahce will be only limited to transfer speculation as he is a player who can still provide a lot to the team.
