Mohamed Salah to skip the Olympics to prioritise preparations with Liverpool for 2024/25

Mohamed Salah has been one of the most important and decisive players for Liverpool in the last few years. The Egyptian has been responsible largely for the Reds’ continental as well as domestic success at the backend of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.

And with Arne Slot incoming, they will be looking to start off on a positive note. Liverpool’s players will be expected to contend for the Premier League once again next season, whereas they are also going to play in the UEFA Champions League after a year’s absence from Europe’s elite club competition.

In a bid to fit in well at Liverpool next season under what is likely to be an all-new setup under Slot, Mohamed Salah has decided to skip the Olympics with Egypt this summer, as per Sky Sports, and will train with the team in its pre-season camp.

Salah was expected to be the over-23 player for Egypt at Paris 2024 and would have very possibly captained the side too, however, he will now be staying back on Merseyside. The forward’s actions are a testimony to his commitment to Liverpool, where he has enjoyed the best phase of his career.

Unlike several of his teammates, Salah logically did not play in the Copa America or Euro 2024 throughout the summer and therefore, the chance to represent Egypt at the Olympics would have been a tempting opportunity for him.

Liverpool, however, will benefit big time from the 32-year-old’s decision as they will have their talisman available and fully fit for the start of the campaign. Salah’s workload management would have been a difficult proposition had he entered the start of the season off the back of playing in the Olympics for a few weeks late in July.

While the Anfield faithful will hope that’s not the case, Salah’s decision to be fresh for the upcoming season may also be an indicator that it may be his final year with the 6-time European champions.

The player’s contract expires in June 2025 and there has been no renewal conversation with the club yet. He has also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia for a long time and may opt for a swoop to the Middle East next year as he will have the chance to pocket a windfall in the latter stages of his career.
