Liverpool make contact for Real Madrid target Jeremie Frimpong
Liverpool have taken significant steps towards bolstering their right-back roster by contacting Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong. The club is prepared to meet Frimpong’s release clause of £34 million, a feasible financial commitment given his current weekly wage of £82,000. This, if anything, demonstrates Liverpool’s serious intent to strengthen their team without overextending their budget.
Despite the straightforward financial aspects, Liverpool faces stiff competition for the player’s signature with Arsenal and Real Madrid also keen. Frimpong harbours dreams of playing for top clubs like Real Madrid, something that threatens to scupper our interest in the player. Nevertheless, the Reds’ early engagement with Frimpong’s representatives could give them a crucial advantage.
Frimpong has caught the attention of Liverpool following an outstanding season under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. The Dutch full-back scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions in 2023/24, making him one of the most sought-after players in this transfer window. His versatility and attacking prowess have not only impressed Liverpool but also other top clubs, potentially leading to a tug-of-war this summer.
According to the German publication Bild via Paisley Gates, the Reds are keen to secure the 23-year-old’s services for the upcoming season. Adding him to the roster should free up Trent Alexander-Arnold to move into the midfield, with the energetic Conor Bradley acting as Frimpong’s understudy.
Frimpong is also capable of playing upfield on the wing, adding another dimension to Arne Slot’s tactical rejigs. However, we have seen several occasions where Frimpong does get caught out tactically, indicating a weakness that needs to be ironed out.
Pursuing the Dutchman is a wise move for Liverpool. His blend of defensive and offensive skills makes him a valuable asset, perfectly suited to Liverpool’s style of play. While Real Madrid’s interest is a significant challenge, Liverpool’s early actions may give them the edge needed to finalize the deal. The 23-year-old’s signing would mark a significant step in Liverpool’s efforts to reinforce their squad and compete at the highest levels under Arne Slot’s leadership.
