Fabrizio Romano confirms that Liverpool are interested in Marc Guehi
Liverpool are in the market for a new centre-back following Joel Matip’s departure on a free transfer. According to Fabrizio Romano on his Playback Live Show via GiveMeSport, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is a prime target for the Reds. Negotiations with Palace are ongoing, but they are not yet advanced due to Guehi’s involvement with the England national team at EURO 2024.
With Virgil van Dijk’s future at Anfield also uncertain, Guehi could be seen as not only a replacement for Matip but potentially for the Reds’ skipper as well. The Dutchman has been a defensive pillar for Liverpool, but his potential exit would leave a significant void. Joe Gomez offers versatility, Ibrahima Konate had an inconsistent second half of the season, and youngster Jarell Quansah is still developing. It is pretty evident that even if Van Dijk ends up staying, the Reds need an addition in defence.
Guehi has been one of the standout performers at EURO 2024, delivering composed and impactful displays. He has formed a solid partnership with John Stones and the performances have not only solidified his place in the national team but also increased his market value.
Romano confirmed Liverpool’s interest in the 24-year-old saying:
“Liverpool have been scouting Marc Guehi for a long time. They really like the player. Despite the ongoing Euros, Liverpool’s interest remains strong, and they are ready to engage in serious negotiations post-tournament. Other clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester United, are also monitoring the situation, but Liverpool seems particularly keen.”
Crystal Palace value Guehi at around £65 million, a figure that reflects his rising stock. Strong in the air and with room still to develop, there is every reason to believe he can take the next step in his development in the right system.
Should Liverpool succeed in signing Guehi, he would be a pivotal addition to the defence. Known for his pace, defensive intelligence, and ball-playing abilities, Guehi would be an ideal partner for or replacement for van Dijk. His recovery speed and tactical awareness would complement Liverpool’s defensive setup, providing stability and versatility.
Guehi’s acquisition would also position Liverpool well should van Dijk leave. Van Dijk’s potential departure would leave a massive gap, and Guehi’s qualities make him a suitable successor. His ability to lead the defence and his composed presence on the field would help maintain the high standards set by van Dijk.

Marc Guehi would be a strategic signing for Liverpool. His defensive capabilities and experience make him an excellent fit for the Premier League giants. The competition for his signature from other top clubs will not make things easier for us, but if Liverpool can finalize this deal, it would mark a significant step in reinforcing their defence, especially in light of potential departures.
