Liverpool star Harvey Elliott praised “fearless” youngster Trey Nyoni for displaying his impressive potential against Real Betis in the pre-season
Harvey Elliott heaped praise on “fearless” Liverpool academy midfielder Trey Nyoni after he impressed everyone during the current pre-season tour. Nyoni played for the Reds against Real Betis in the 1-0 friendly victory, showcasing his elegant quality and high potential.
The 17-year-old played the deeper role behind the two number 10s, Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai during the friendly game. Nyoni showed impressive close control, and dribbling ability combined with elegant agility, game-reading ability and reflexes to dodge tackles and duels.
The young Englishman proved that he could play comfortably at the senior level in congested spaces with incredible press resistance. Furthermore, Nyoni displayed immense variation in passing accuracy and technique to dictate the tempo and use possession wisely in the buildup.
Elliott told the Athletic that Nyoni showcased his immense potential and fearlessness while playing with the senior team. He said:
“Trey has got everything in him. He showed it the other night. He is fearless at such a young age. He just needs to keep going and trust the process. I’ve spoken to him and the seniors who have been around it a lot longer than I have, they have spoken to him as well.”
Trey is still developing in physique, height and strength and new head coach Arne Slot has already emphasized supervision. The 17-year-old could quickly become a regular senior team feature if he maintains the consistency and development.
It is a sign of great togetherness that youngsters like Nyoni are open to taking advice from experienced players. Furthermore, it also shows that Elliott has transitioned so fast despite his young age and is a good example for academy players.
Elliott enjoyed a steep rise from the academy to a regular name in the senior team squad under Jurgen Klopp. Slot has a similar reputation as Klopp in developing academy players as highly consistent senior team players.
