Liverpool have to wait for PSV Eindhoven to make another offer for Sepp van den Berg until pre-season tour ends

PSV Eindhoven are waiting for Liverpool to end their pre-season tour before making another bid for Sepp van den Berg. PSV made a £10m offer for Van Den Berg which the Reds rejected immediately as they value him at £20m.

New Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is using the pre-season tour to assess the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp. The Reds are already short on the defence department after veteran centre-back Joel Matip left the club recently for free.

Liverpool struggled to keep clean sheets last season and frequently conceded the first goal which created a lot of problems. The Reds need to make sure that they don’t face a similar issue next season under the new head coach.

Captain Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are the defensive options apart from Van den Berg. Moreover, Konate and Gomez have a poor injury record while Liverpool used Gomez as a utility player throughout last season.

Van den Berg enjoyed a steep positive development with consistency during his loan spell with FSV Mainz 05 last season. He played an important role for the German side to survive a relegation drop from the Bundesliga, earning big praise.

Liverpool fans have thoroughly followed Van den Berg’s journey and many believe that he deserves a chance at Anfield. Several European clubs want the Dutchman’s services but no one has matched the asking price tag till now.

According to Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink (via Liverpool Echo), PSV are not making further bids for Van den Berg until Liverpool’s pre-season tour ends. The situation could allow Slot to thoroughly assess Van den Berg as a potential defensive option for Liverpool.

If Van den Berg stakes his claim at Liverpool, it would allow them to focus on other departments in August. Liverpool’s biggest concern is the defensive midfield position as it lacks sufficient options, making it a necessity.
