Anthony Gordon could go on strike to force Liverpool switch

Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon might go on strike to secure a move to Liverpool this month, sources have told Football Insider. The boyhood Liverpool fan has been significantly influenced by the Merseyside giants’ “concrete and active” interest in signing him. Despite talks between the two clubs over a player-exchange deal collapsing at the end of June, Liverpool’s pursuit remains strong.

The Magpies had initially been open to a deal only if Jarell Quansah moved in the opposite direction, a proposal Liverpool rejected. However, the idea of a player-exchange deal is not entirely off the table. It has since been revealed that Liverpool offered Joe Gomez to facilitate the agreement, showcasing their determination to land Gordon.

Gordon is very eager to join Liverpool, but Newcastle are equally determined to keep him. The Magpies are ready to offer him a new and improved contract to ensure his satisfaction and loyalty. However, according to an exclusive from Football Insider, there are growing concerns within the Newcastle camp that Gordon might try to engineer his move to Liverpool once he returns from his post-Euros break. One possibility is that he could effectively down tools, a tactic sometimes used by players to force a transfer.

Gordon’s history with Liverpool adds another layer to this saga. The England international was on Liverpool’s books as a child but was released when he was just 11 years old. The prospect of returning to his boyhood club is undoubtedly appealing to him, further fueling his desire to make the move happen.

The potential Liverpool frontline will take some stopping.

If Liverpool were to secure Gordon’s signature, it would come at a significant cost. Newcastle has valued the 23-year-old at £75million, with the price potentially rising to £100million with add-ons. This valuation reflects his impressive performances since joining the Magpies from Everton for £45million in January 2023.

Gordon has been a standout player at St. James’ Park, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions last season. His contributions were crucial, earning him the club’s Player of the Season award for the 2023-24 campaign. Losing him would be a substantial blow to Eddie Howe’s side, who have come to rely on his attacking prowess and creative ability.

Liverpool’s continued interest in Gordon displays how keen they are to secure his signature and the Englishman’s potential impact at Anfield could justify the investment. His ability to score and create goals would be a valuable asset to Jurgen Klopp’s side, especially with the potential departure of other key players.

However, the situation also poses a significant risk. If Gordon does go on strike, it could sour relations and create unrest within both clubs. It’s a delicate balance between securing a dream move and maintaining professional integrity. Liverpool and Newcastle will need to navigate these negotiations carefully to reach a mutually beneficial outcome.
