David Ornstein confirms that Liverpool have zeroed in on a target for the defensive midfield role

The Atheltic’s David Ornstein has carved himself a niche when it comes to dropping transfer bombshells, and Liverpool fans will be excited with what he has to say regarding the club’s search for a new number six.

Liverpool currently have only Wataru Endo to don the defensive midfielder’s role. While Stefan Bajcetic and more recently, Ryan Gravenberch have shown their aptitude in the role, the Reds could do with a seasoned campaigner who can come in and make an instant impact.

The Reds are the only side yet to make a senior signing this summer in the Premier League. With the summer deadline just weeks away, it appears we can now expect the recruitment wheels to start turning. If Ornstein is to be believed, the upcoming week should be a busy one at Anfield.

The current options at number six.

Ornstein has now revealed that despite Arne Slot’s impressions of Gravenberch in the number six role, the Reds have now identified a target who suits their needs. While he refused to give away any specific details, it is noteworthy that the player in question is foreign.

Liverpool have been linked with several players in the role this summer, including Joao Neves, Teun Koopmeiners, and Ederson. We know it is not the former since he has already joined Paris Saint-Germain. However, Ederson and Koopmeiners are still available, and time will tell if it is either of them. Knowing Liverpool, they could even spring a surprise by bringing in a player like Morten Frendrup who might be a better fit for our system.

Moving in silence as usual.

Reds fans will not have to wait long for news on the topic, as Ornstein expects the upcoming week to be significant. Given how our recruitment team moves behind the scenes, it will not come as a surprise should a deal be wrapped up, ready to be made public.

“It is worth keeping an eye on that situation this week, with Liverpool pursuing a specialist No 6 from outside of the Premier League.”

There are few players who can come into the Liverpool roster and make a difference. One can expect the player potentially coming in to be of a certain standard, given our selective process in recruitment. Retaining Wataru Endo will ensure we have strength in depth, as Slot prepares to navigate multiple fronts in his first campaign as Liverpool boss.
