Liverpool linked with move for Valencia shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili
Liverpool might be yet to make a signing under Arne Slot this summer but it’s still better than being linked with a host of players like Manchester United and signing just two. Reliable journalist Paul Joyce revealed earlier today that the Reds have expressed interest in signing Martin Zubimendi.
Truth be told, there aren’t many areas that Liverpool need reinforcements in. Jurgen Klopp did such a good job last summer revamping the midfield and handed over a squad capable of challenging for trophies as it is to his successor. Ah well, what else do you expect from Kloppo?
That said, there are certain areas where the Merseyside club can do with reinforcements. Centre-back is one area where the Reds are slightly short considering Joel Matip left the club at the end of last season. Of course, Arne Slot could choose to trust Sepp van den Berg but he continues to be linked with a move away from Anfield.
One position where Liverpool don’t necessarily need reinforcements unless someone leaves is the goalkeeper slot. Alisson Becker is as good as they come for the #1 spot if you can look past his odd mistake. Calling Caoimhin Kelleher a backup would be a crime considering how good he has been when given a chance.
Despite this, Alisson’s future at the club is not clear and Liverpool want to prepare for the future. As per Spanish news outlet COPE (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are considering signing Valencia shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili and loaning him back to the La Liga side with an eye on the future.
The 23-year-old Georgian shot-stopper is quite frankly a rock in goal and his performances in the past couple of seasons have further nailed down this narrative. Mamardashvili is coming off an exceptional Euros for surprise package Georgia who managed to make it out of their group in their first-ever tournament appearance.
Mamardashvili would only consider a move to Anfield if he was the first-choice shot-stopper. Thus, Liverpool are looking at solutions like loaning him back to Mestalla. That said, one would hope that Kelleher is the club’s succession plan to Alisson, should the 31-year-leave.
Kelleher is a cult hero at Anfield. He has the makings of a top-class shot-stopper. The Irish goalie will not want to be second fiddle for much longer. There have been calls for the 25-year-old to leave Anfield this summer and move to a club where he will be the first-choice goalkeeper.

Investing funds in Mamardashvili at the moment doesn’t seem to be the smartest thing to do from a Liverpool perspective unless someone like Alisson was to leave the club. That said, Michael Edwards is an expert at identifying transfers and it remains to be seen how the Reds go about pursuing this particular transfer.
