Chelsea are interested in Liverpool star Joe Gomez

As the transfer window’s final days approach, speculation around Liverpool FC’s squad continues to swirl. While much of the focus has been on potential arrivals, one story that’s starting to gather steam involves a possible departure—and it’s not one that Reds fans might have expected. Amidst a busy transfer period, Chelsea have reportedly set their sights on one of Liverpool’s longest-serving defenders: Joe Gomez.

With Chelsea facing defensive challenges of their own, their interest in bolstering the backline before the window closes is no surprise. The Blues have been active in the market, eyeing several high-profile targets, but it’s their reported pursuit of Gomez that has caught the attention of many in the football world. Despite a mixed pre-season that saw Chelsea concede 13 goals across six games, the Stamford Bridge outfit remains determined to strengthen defensively. However, this particular chase could lead to a tug-of-war with Liverpool.

From a Liverpool perspective, the idea of losing a player of Gomez’s calibre—especially to a Premier League rival—is something that doesn’t sit well. The 27-year-old has been a dependable presence at Anfield, and his experience could still prove vital for Arne Slot’s side in a season where squad depth will be crucial.

While he has been a dependable player for the Reds, Gomez is far from an automatic starter. At 27, he should be starting week-in, week-out but that is unlikely to be the case if the defensive roster is fully fit. According to the Times, the defender is currently assessing his options and could make a move in the coming days.

Gomez’s journey with Liverpool began back in 2015, and over nearly a decade, he has become a symbol of the club’s resilience and adaptability. Whether filling in as a centre-back, stepping up as a full-back during injury crises, or simply being a reliable option off the bench, Gomez has played a significant role in Liverpool’s triumphs. He’s been part of a squad that has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and more—a trophy cabinet that would be the envy of any player.

However, despite his contributions, Gomez has found himself on the periphery more often in recent times. Last season, he made 32 Premier League appearances, but only 15 of those were starts. With Virgil van Dijk and new talent Jarell Quansah now seen as Arne Slot’s preferred centre-back pairing, and with both Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas fit, Gomez’s opportunities have been more limited. His exclusion from Liverpool’s squad for the Premier League opener against Ipswich Town has only intensified the rumours of a potential move.

The prospect of losing Gomez, especially to a club like Chelsea, presents a significant dilemma for Liverpool. On one hand, his versatility and experience are invaluable assets that any squad would be fortunate to have. On the other hand, with his current contract running until 2027, Liverpool might see this as an opportunity to capitalize on a player who, despite his qualities, is not a guaranteed starter.

For Gomez, the decision is equally complex. At 27, he is at the peak of his career and understandably desires regular first-team football. A move to Chelsea, who are reportedly looking to reinforce their backline after a season of defensive woes, could provide him with the game time he craves. Add to it his experience of winning trophies and the Blues would be getting the complete package. Meanwhile, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Fulham are also keen.

While we understand Gomez’s predicament, Gomez is better off staying put at Anfield. As we saw last night with Jarell Quansah, Slot is not averse to changing players if the situation demands it. All Gomez needs to do is work his way into the Dutchman’s plans.
