After announcing the arrival of Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili, Liverpool remain adamant about ending their otherwise dry transfer window on a high.

One of the positions Liverpool need to find reinforcement for is the deep-lying midfield role to help Arne Slot move away from Jürgen Klopp‘s heavy-metal football.

Here, we present fresh updates regarding a link that emerged a few hours ago.

Alan Varela to Liverpool a “non-starter”

As reported by Liverpool Echo, all recent links between Porto midfielder Alan Varela and Liverpool are likely to lead nowhere, with the former having no intention of letting the 23-year-old move this summer.

Varela’s had only one season in Europe, having arrived at the Dragão from Boca Juniors last summer. He did, however, have an exemplary debut campaign in Portugal last term and helped his side win the Taça de Portugal.

Currently valued by Transfermarkt at €35 million, Varela currently has a €770,000-per-week contract in place with Porto that is set to run until June 2028.

Liverpool remain on the hunt for a defensive operator that could fit Slot’s style of play and offer backup for Alexis Mac Allister.

You just never know

Alan Varela is stylistically fairly different from the kind of #6 Slot wants in his side, which explains why the Liverpool links are mostly dead in the water.

You just never know, though. Varela’s still only 23 and already an exceptional passer of the ball. Much also depends on whether a coach thinks a player can be moulded into an operator aligning with their vision.

Nevertheless, Varela’s market valuation, his nascent European career, and the existence of other already better fits on the market indicate that a late move for the Argentine in this window is highly unlikely.
