As the summer transfer window draws to a close, so amps up Liverpool’s transfer activity.

One of the Reds players touted to leave Anfield this summer has been Joe Gomez. The once-highly-rated teenager may not have reached the heights he was expected to reach, but he still commands enough respect from the onlookers to have multiple Premier League monitoring his situation.

Recent reports suggest that, while a move is unlikely this late in the window, it is not out of the question.

Joe Gomez key to Liverpool’s deadline day plans, says Paul Gorst

According to Liverpool Echo’s Paul Gorst, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez may well end up deciding his club’s transfer activity in the final hours of this summer transfer window.

The future of Joe Gomez is perhaps the biggest issue for Liverpool on August 30. The versatile defender was left out of the squad that travelled to Ipswich Town for the opening game of the season and was exploring his options after nine years as a Reds player.

Chelsea briefly took a look while Crystal Palace have also been credited with an interest, but much depends on the future of their own England defender, Marc Guehi, who has been a long-standing target for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have had a number of bids turned down by Palace for Guehi with the Eagles starting the centre-back for their 4-0 win over Norwich City in the second round of the Carabao Cup earlier this week. Fulham’s move for Joachim Andersen will strengthen Palace’s resolve to keep Guehi, which could hold implications for Gomez, who was the subject of a £45m deal with Newcastle in June.

Any sale of Gomez would almost certainly need Liverpool to bring in a replacement and the Reds are insisting they are planning for life with the 27-year-old in their ranks for the campaign ahead.

Names like Piero Hincapie and Goncalo Inacio, of Leverkusen and Sporting, respectively, have been linked in recent times, although it is understood there is no interest in pursuing a deal for Mohamed Simakan at RB Leipzig.

Gomez moved to Liverpool from Football League side Charlton Athletic nine summers ago on the back of £3.5m move. Destined for greatness, the England international has indeed gone on to establish himself as a well-regarded Premier League operator, though injuries have certainly hampered his progress, the 27-year-old having missed a total of 246 games for club and country during his time at Merseyside.

Liverpool are looking for a fee in the region of at least £30 million to consider letting Gomez go, whose £85,000-per-week contract is currently set to run until June 2027.

One Joe to rule them all

Joe Gomez holds the key to quite the merry-go-round that could ensue if he were to move. More importantly, despite what Liverpool say officially it’s clear he’s not a crucial part of their plans going forward.

That may change as the months go by, for despite injuries hampering his progress Gomez remains a very capable operator at the top level.

The clock’s ticking, however, and Liverpool need to be at the ready with a replacement if a move for Gomez materialises in the next few hours.
