Life as a professional athlete comes with its highs and lows. We’ve heard some of the greatest in sports say “It’s how you pick yourself up after things go south that matters”. One such player who found himself in a difficult position is Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah. However, the way Quansah handles the situation as he expresses his thoughts is quite remarkable.
Jarrel Quansah remains bullish about his chances
Quansah started the game against Ipswich as Liverpool kicked off their premier league campaign. However, things looked nervy with the Englishman as he was taken off in a surprising half-time substitution by Arne Slot. The new manager while explaining the situation felt Quansah wasn’t up to the mark with his battles and duels. This was Arne Slot’s first major in-game tactical change with the Reds.
The Warrington-born defender was called up to the Young Lions squad. Not only did he make an appearance but he also was presented with the Man of the Match trophy. In the aftermath of the game, Quansah took time to talk to the Times about how he felt about the incident against Ipswich for the first time:
“It’s a long season, I have the whole season to prove myself,”
“It’s given me a kick up the backside, you could say. I’ll keep grafting on the training pitch and that’s all it is. It’s never a nice feeling as a footballer to be subbed off at half-time but at the end of the day it was the gaffer’s decision and it was the right one.”
He also mentioned the next day’s talk with the gaffer:
“The next day he pulled me in. He just went through his mindset and why he made the decision, ultimately. I think the reasons he gave me were fair enough. It worked because we won, so I can only focus on myself, improve myself, kick forward and move on to the next game.”
Quansah could be replacing his mentor in the coming season
Quansah also expressed his gratitude to Virgin Van Dijk who’s known for his leadership and was Quansah’s partner on the defence. He also expressed his large gratitude towards him addressing how he’s helped the youngster:
“The way Virgil talks you through the game, I’ve never heard anyone like it.”
“He might annoy us at times but it’s all for the greater good. With all the experience he has and the situations he’s been in, it’s only fair that he can share his knowledge so we can be the best players we can.”

These words coming out of a 21-year-old determine the youngster’s mindset. Quansah who led the Liverpool under-18 to an FA Cup final is surely no short of motivation despite his Ipswich game performance. The defender signed a four-year deal which offered him €15,000 gross per week.
He made his professional debut in August 2023 and has featured plenty of times for Jurgen Klopp. With Van Dijk’s future in doubt, Quansah could be in for greater responsibilities.
