Liverpool star Cody Gakpo delivered a fantastic performance in the Champions League 3-1 victory over AC Milan on Tuesday evening. Liverpool Head coach Arne Slot provided the Dutchman with the opportunity to impress by starting him over in-form Luis Diaz.

Gakpo made the most of his opportunity by continuing the top form that he showed in the Euro 2024 competition. Liverpool suffered an early setback during the game after Milan’s Christian Pulisic provided a quick third-minute goal to the host.

However, the Reds dominated the rest of the game and scored two goals from set-piece situations before the halftime whistle. Liverpool added their third goal in the 67th minute of the game with Gakpo providing an assist to Dominic Szoboszlai.

The 25-year-old’s impressive form gives Slot a massive but welcoming selection headache as he possesses two fantastic left-wing attacking options. Slot substituted Gakpo in the 68th minute as a straight swap with Diaz, ending his incredible outing at San Siro.

Sofascore revealed that the Dutch international made two key passes with 82% passing accuracy apart from earning a deserved assist. Furthermore, Gakpo made four out of seven successful dribbles, won 100% aerial duels and six out of 10 ground duels.

The Dutchman also helped left-back Kostas Tsimikas in tracking back the opponents, making one tackle and one interception against Milan. Gakpo received big praise on social media for his performance, opposite feedback compared to last season’s criticism he faced.

The 25-year-old faced criticism after the FA Cup loss to Manchester United in March despite a poor collective performance from Liverpool. However, the Dutch international returned strongly from the March international break while his teammates suffered a drastic dip in form.

Gakpo has continued delivering consistent performances, playing in his preferred left-wing position instead of playing in several different attacking positions. His versatility is a bonus but it worked against him last season as he filled makeshift roles in many games.

The Dutch international is earning £120,000 per week at Liverpool and has a key role to play this season. Liverpool have a very busy fixture schedule which will allow both Gakpo and Diaz to feature immensely throughout this season.
