Liverpool beat AC Milan 1-3 at San Siro in the Champions League opening fixture, impressing famed journalist Fabrizio Romano. The Reds immediately bounced back from their surprising 0-1 loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield after the September international break.

The victory holds great importance after the Nottingham loss as Liverpool returned to the Champions League for the current season. The Reds missed out on the most prestigious tournament last season due to their poor campaign during the 2022-23 season.

The new format for the Champions League football has also increased the number of games for the clubs this season. Furthermore, Liverpool have received a very tricky fixture as they play Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, PSV Eindhoven and Real Madrid.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot started his tenure with success after winning three Premier League games while conceding zero goals. However, the international break ruined their rhythm and complacency issues resurfaced against Nottingham right after they defeated Manchester United 0-3.

The Reds suffered a similar problem with complacency last season that cost them many games and eventually the major trophies. Liverpool needs to build upon their win against Milan and maintain their focus as the congested fixture builds more pressure.

In his Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside, Romano expressed his admiration for Liverpool’s victory at the tough San Siro. He said:

“I was also impressed by Liverpool, because winning at San Siro is never easy.”

Slot inherited a strong squad from Klopp and only added Federico Chiesa during the summer transfer window. Many Liverpool fans desired more signings as certain gaps within the squad took a toll late last season.

However, the rise of Ryan Gravenberch and the efficiency of the new tactical style under Slot have provided them hope. The new style of play allows players to conserve their energy which could assist them in maintaining fitness and avoiding injuries during this hectic season.
