Liverpool winger Luis Diaz had been subject to massive speculation with a move to arch-rivals Manchester City in the recently concluded summer transfer window, and the Merseyside Reds have expectedly reacted as they have not only started new contract talks with the players but are also making substantial progress.
Alongside Manchester City, La Liga giants Barcelona also expressed interest in landing the former Porto player.
The Reds wide forward has made a magnificent start to the new campaign, and according to an exclusive by Graham Bailey, the Reds are looking to extend his stay at Anfield Stadium and sort out his long-term future with the new deal.
Liverpool fends off City and Barcelona interest in Diaz
Liverpool signed Luis Diaz from Portuguese giants FC Porto in 2022 in a deal aggregating to £50m including add-ons, and he went on to become an important player in Klopp’s side. The Sadio Mane successor has seemingly done wonders for his time under Arne Slot.
The player was linked with a move to Barcelona after Jurgen Klopp’s exit, and an exit for the Colombian seemed well on cards, especially after a bleak tally of 13 goals and five assists in the previous season, which is good for a decent player but low considering Diaz’ potential.
However, the Spanish giants could not come to common terms with the Reds, and Diaz remained a Liverpool player beyond the summer window. The club was frustrated as the player’s representatives were public about pushing their client for a move to Catalonia.
Blessing in disguise?
Luis Diaz has enjoyed a brilliant start to the season, and his failed move to Barcelona now seems a blessing in disguise. He has already scored five goals and provided an assist in only five games in the English top tier.
The chiefs at Liverpool have been quite impressed at the winger’s performance and are willing to reward him with a new deal.
