Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo displayed his readiness by delivering a sensational performance in the West Ham United victory on Wednesday. The Reds beat the Hammers 5-1 at Anfield in the Carabao Cup round-three game to progress further in the competition.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot used squad rotation to make numerous changes while resting the regular first-team players so far. Slot has used Ryan Gravenberch as the number six this season and the 22-year-old Dutchman has delivered consistent high-quality performances.

Meanwhile, Endo has patiently waited for his opportunity while understanding that the hectic schedule will give him enough game time. Liverpool signed the Japan captain last summer from Stuttgart after failing to secure Moises Caicedo to replace outgoing midfielder Fabinho.

Liverpool star Wataru Endo replaced on-form midfielder Ryan Gravenberch in the starting lineup against West Ham United in the 5-1 Carabao Cup victory

Despite the lack of reputation and age, Endo earned the respect and admiration of his peers and the Reds fanbase. However, the departure of legendary manager Jurgen Klopp and consequently Slot’s arrival changed the situation at Liverpool for the 31-year-old.

Slot prefers a defensive midfielder of a different profile compared to what Klopp preferred in his high-paced and direct style. Liverpool wanted Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi during the summer as he matched the profile that Slot desired at the club.

However, the failure to sign Zubimendi allowed the rise of Gravenberch and put Endo as the second option behind him. The Japan captain earned his opportunity against the Hammers in the Carabao Cup tie and delivered a statement performance.

Endo’s game started with a poor clearance in the 21st minute which deflected into the goal after hitting Jarell Quansah. However, the Japanese showed a resolute mindset and helped Liverpool dominate the rest of the game until his 82nd-minute substitution.

According to SofaScore, Endo enjoyed 94% passing accuracy, making one key pass and winning three out of four aerial duels. The 31-year-old also made two interceptions, one clearance, one tackle and blocked one shot in a strong defensive performance.

The rest of the Liverpool squad needs to follow Endo’s example and maintain their readiness as the congested fixture period takes its toll. The Japan captain continues to grow his status as a cult hero at the club regardless of what the future holds for him.
