After a challenging first half against West Ham, Curtis Jones made a significant impact in Liverpool’s 5-1 win following a position change. Jones was among nine players rotated into the squad for the Carabao Cup third-round match at Anfield, and the Reds initially struggled to find their rhythm.

Liverpool faced a setback with Quansah’s unfortunate own goal, but Diogo Jota quickly equalized, bringing the score to 1-1 by halftime. Arne Slot made significant tactical adjustments during the break, which shifted the momentum of the match. In the second half, four goals were scored, and Liverpool dominated the rest of the game, effectively turning the tide in their favor. Speaking to LFCTV after the match, Jones mentioned that he had informed the head coach during halftime that Liverpool was experiencing a lack of space in midfield.

The Talk That Changed The Flow Of The Game

The 23-year-old midfielder, currently earning £15,000 per week, is highly versatile, capable of playing on the left, right, or centrally. He is quickly establishing himself as Liverpool’s go-to rotation player, having made 136 appearances for the club and contributed 31 goals. Given his potential, we can expect even more from this promising youngster in the future.

“At half-time I was saying there’s no space, they set up with a mid block where it was hard for the centre-mids to play and stuff,”

“But in the second half it opened up more, I was able to get more space and we were playing through more, and that’s where the goals came from.”

“I was playing more as a No. 8 in the first half and in the second half I played more as a No. 10,”

This change came as Jones switched roles, with Slot placing his trust in Wataru Endo to hold the midfield as the deepest player. After suffering a muscle injury in training at the start of the season, Jones had to make do with brief appearances in back-to-back matches against Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth.

However, he was brought into the starting lineup against West Ham, marking his first start of the season among five players who were making their initial appearances in the starting XI. Arne Slot has shown a constant record of shifting his tactics around when needed and this pragmatism showcases his incredible tactical flexibility.

With Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai all featuring among Slot’s five most-used players this season, having Jones back fit and settled is a significant boost for the team.

Liverpool with a busy fixture list can expect the Scouser to be regularly rotated into the squad. Based on his performance on Wednesday night, there should be no concerns about his integration into the starting XI.
