Liverpool have made a strong start to the 2024/25 Premier League season, currently sitting at the top of the table. However, not everything is flawless under new manager Arne Slot, who took over from the legendary Jürgen Klopp this summer.
While Klopp left Slot with a star-studded squad, he departed before securing new contracts for several key players. The futures of captain Virgil van Dijk, talisman Mohamed Salah, and local hero Trent Alexander-Arnold remain uncertain, as all three are now in the final year of their contracts.
Liverpool view the defender as a generational talent and a future captain but fear he could leave for a club like Real Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the season. Club legend Mark Lawrenson seems to have already accepted the possibility of his departure.
Mark Lawrenson Believes TAA will follow Owen’s Path
“I think he’ll go to Real Madrid,”
“If he wanted to stay he would have done the deal by now. He’ll be on great money now but he could earn even more at the Bernabeu. His bank manager would be delighted. I understand it, too. It would be a real thrill to go and test yourself against the best players in the world. From a cultural standpoint, too. He’s a well-educated boy he’s a smart lad he’s from a good family Liverpool. Spain would be something new and exciting.”

The Scouser currently earns £180,000 per week and has been a key part of Liverpool’s success for years. At just 25, he has already achieved both domestic and European triumphs. Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson points to two past examples of Reds stars leaving for Real Madrid to advance their careers: Steve McManaman, who departed in 1999, and Michael Owen, who followed in 2005.
Lawrenson notes that both Michael Owen and Steve McManaman made successful moves from Liverpool to Real Madrid, enjoying their time in Spain. He believes that if Trent Alexander-Arnold were to follow in their footsteps, it could help him develop into an even better player at Real Madrid.

Lawrenson also believes that nothing is decided yet. Alexander-Arnold, who has been with Liverpool since the age of six and has a deep connection to the club, may simply be exploring his options before making a final commitment.
