“Unprofessional” Gary Neville continues to dismiss Liverpool

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville crossed the professional line again, continuing to disrespect Liverpool despite their strong start this season. The Manchester United legend joined the punditry and earned big praise for his unbiased analysis but has lost his way.

While Neville and Liverpool shared a fierce rivalry when he played for Man United, the Englishman gained some respect post-retirement. However, his horrendous tenure at Valencia raised many legitimate questions about his expertise in the game.

Since his return to punditry from that failed stint in the La Liga, Neville has changed his style to compensate. The Man United legend behaves more like a social media influencer than a football pundit deserving of television time.

Neville has downplayed Liverpool in his early prediction every season while hyping up his Manchester club which remains in mediocrity. Liverpool fans have always laughed off the behaviour of the 49-year-old but there is a threshold to everything.

Speaking to the Gary Neville podcast (via Sky Sports), the 49-year-old once again downplayed Liverpool after their win over Wolves. He said:

“They’re going to have a good season it looks like and maybe get Champions League football. I didn’t feel like I was watching title winners [at Wolves] being honest with you. They’re well below Arsenal and City but I don’t think that’s shocking anybody.”

Common folks lose their hard-earned jobs for showing an ounce of unprofessional behaviour that Neville has displayed. He has the platform that shapes opinion and influences the game which could have potentially negative consequences for Liverpool.

Liverpool have won seven out of eight games in all competitions, currently sitting at the top of the Premier League. No Liverpool fan is overhyping the club as a legitimate title contender so early in the season, negating other clubs.

However, Liverpool’s accomplishments and quick transition under Arne Slot deserve more respect from the media that shrugged them off. Many pundits like Neville wanted Slot to face the same scrutiny that Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger’s successor faced.

Furthermore, Neville’s Man United who he predicted to finish third are currently 13th in the Premier League table. While many fans continue to debate the boundaries between professionalism and banter, we think Neville needs to either quit television and become a podcaster or tone down this abuse of his platform.
