Liverpool want Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during the January window as the competition and eventual successor to Virgil van Dijk. Branthwaite has established himself as the key player in Everton’s defence and has earned praise despite his club’s continuous struggles.

Everton are currently 16th in the Premier League table, having conceded 15 goals from six games so far this season. The local rivals have conceded the second-most goals in the Premier League so far this season due to Branthwaite’s absence.

The 22-year-old has missed most of the games during the start of the current season due to a groin injury. He returned to action against Crystal Palace last weekend, the only game that Everton won 2-1 in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have enjoyed a strong start to their season by winning seven out of eight games in all competitions. Van Dijk has played a pivotal role in the club’s success both as the captain and the primary central defender.

However, the Dutchman is 33 years of age and Liverpool needs a plan of succession to make a smooth transition. Liverpool could sign a young player who would compete with Van Dijk for the starting position and eventually succeed him.

The new Champions League format has increased the fixtures and it is important to have two players for each position. Furthermore, the Reds lack a left-footed central defender in their team and have actively scouted the market for one.

According to Daily Mail, Liverpool want Everton star Branthwaite during the January window to solve Van Dijk’s successor issue. The 22-year-old is earning £35,000 per week at Everton with his contract which expires in the summer of 2027.

Liverpool needs to work swiftly or they could face tough competition for Branthwaite as his reputation continues to grow. Furthermore, dealing with bitter rivals could prove tricky despite their financial situation and struggle to maintain their Premier League status.

Branthwaite fits the profile perfectly for Liverpool to succeed Van Dijk, having the height and athleticism combined with maturity. The 22-year-old has a lot of room for improvement and his homegrown status is another bonus for the Reds.

Branthwaite, a two-footed defender with immense ball skills, finds his talent restricted by Everton’s playing style. A move to Liverpool could practically benefit everyone involved, but emotions will significantly influence the potential deal.
