Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate delivered a dominating performance against Bologna in the 2-0 Champions League victory at Anfield on Wednesday. The Reds continued their fine start to the current season, registering their eighth victory from nine games in all competitions.
Konate has played a key role in Liverpool’s defence, maintaining his position as the first-choice partner alongside Virgil van Dijk. The France international received criticism last season after suffering a surprise drop in form late alongside several other senior players.
The 25-year-old has struggled with fitness and nagging injuries during his tenure at Liverpool, halting his progress in the team. Nevertheless, Konate has enjoyed the trust of new head coach Arne Slot and delivered dominant performances alongside crucial set-piece goals.
The Frenchman has made eight appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring two goals and providing one assist. Konate’s resurgence in defence and gradual improvement in possession could allow him to remain the first-choice over youngster Jarell Quansah.
According to SofaScore, the 25-year-old won 100% aerial duels against Bologna, making two clearances and blocking one shot. The Frenchman enjoyed 94% passing accuracy, delivering 100% accurate long balls to help Liverpool dominate the game in and out of possession.
Konate received a yellow card in the 39th minute for grappling with Bologna’s Sam Beukema during a set-piece situation. Konate’s reaction to the booking amused the social media fans but also summed up poor refereeing from Nikola Dabanovic.
Liverpool have only conceded four goals so far and need to continue their defensive dominance to achieve their goals. However, there is much evidence of poor decision-making leading to the opposition’s attack that could prove costly against better teams.

Konate and captain Van Dijk need to make sure that the players ahead of them remain focused and not lose possession cheaply. The Reds will face Crystal Palace on the weekend before heading into the October international break.
