Liverpool were in fine form before the international break, dominating their way to the top of the Premier League table. Now, there’s even more reason for fans to celebrate.

According to reports from Florian Plettenberg, Real Madrid have dropped their interest in Liverpool’s talismanic right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and shifted their focus to Bayer Leverkusen’s domestic double-winning right-back, Jeremie Frimpong. This could offer Liverpool a major sigh of relief, allowing them to keep one of their key players while Madrid pursue other options.

Frimpong was sensational for Die Werkself as they won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double last term, contributing to 26 goals.

TAA and Frimpong

Jeremie Frimpong, the 23-year-old right-wing-back, may not have been as prolific this season in terms of goals or assists, but his defensive contributions have been solid. He has helped Bayer Leverkusen keep three clean sheets in six Bundesliga games and two more in the Champions League, shutting out both Feyenoord and AC Milan.

Known for his lightning pace and attacking prowess, Frimpong is a dynamic force in the final third, making him an attractive option for top European clubs in search of an aggressive right-flank player. Notably, the Netherlands international has a €40 million release clause which the Dutchman earns a steady £66,923 per week, which Real Madrid could trigger, bypassing any need for negotiations with Leverkusen.

Frimpong played a key role in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2023/24 Bundesliga triumph.

Liverpool will likely see Real Madrid’s pursuit of Jeremie Frimpong as a relief, given that Los Blancos had previously been exploring a potential free transfer for Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract is set to expire next summer.

Alexander-Arnold is into the final year of his contract with his boyhood club, and it has been all quiet on the renewal front, leaving fans in suspense. They fear the worst, seeing their treasured gem walking for free.

However, the news that Frimpong is on Real Madrid’s radar will boost Liverpool’s hopes that they can renew his contract and keep him at Anfield for the foreseeable future.

Following a subpar 2023/24 season, Trent Alexander-Arnold has rediscovered his best form under Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, and is expected to be a key figure in the club’s future beyond Jürgen Klopp. Liverpool must prioritise securing Alexander-Arnold’s long-term future by offering a new contract and avoiding the risk of losing him to Real Madrid on a free transfer.
