Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Liverpool must win the Premier League this season for Trent Alexander-Arnold to extend his contract. Merson provided his matchday predictions while outlining the importance of the game at Anfield for the Reds against archrivals Chelsea.

Liverpool have won nine out of their first 10 games in all competitions under the new head coach Arne Slot. However, their one loss came against Nottingham Forest at Anfield right after the September international break due to undesired complacency.

The Reds have struggled with similar problems last season that eventually cost them the Europa League and the Premier League. However, Liverpool needs to maintain their composure as they face tough opponents during the congested fixture period, starting with Chelsea.

The Reds have not faced a single team from the top half of the Premier League so far this season. Slot has already highlighted the importance of Liverpool proving themselves against top opponents before even dreaming of any potential title.

Merson told Sportskeeda that Liverpool’s ability to win the league this season could influence Trent’s decision to extend his contract. He said:

“I don’t think Trent Alexander-Arnold will have his head turned already by Real Madrid interest. He’ll wait a couple of months and then he’s free to discuss with whoever, so he’ll keep it on the back of his mind. Liverpool must win the league this season for him to stay. I think it’s the same with Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah too.”

Alexander-Arnold is playing in the last season of his current contract which earns him £180,000 per week at the club. The 26-year-old can negotiate for a pre-contract agreement with any club if Liverpool fails to extend his contract before January.

The Reds cannot afford to lose one of their prime assets as a free agent, irrespective of the emotional consequences. Emotionally speaking, Trent is a homegrown scouser and his decision to leave will hurt the fanbase.

Many Liverpool fans dream of playing for Liverpool and only a handful have the talent to complement that passion. Alexander-Arnold is the representation of all the local Liverpool fans who treat Anfield as the temple for their beloved sport.
