Liverpool star Ryan Gravenberch rejected studying another number six like Rodri but revealed the extensive help given by John Heitinga. Arne Slot shifted Gravenberch to the number six role after failing to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi last summer.

Gravenberch has established himself as a first-team regular for the Reds in the new role, gaining important guidance from Heitinga. Heitinga, the former Everton defender, surprised football fans after accepting the role of an assistant coach under Slot at Liverpool.

The 40-year-old joined West Ham United as an assistant to David Moyes as the first gig in his coaching career. Gravenberch’s special compliment for Heitinga adds to the good reputation that the Dutch coach has built in his coaching career.

Daily Mail writer Lewis Steele highlighted that Gravenberch refuses to study other number six like Manchester City’s Rodri to improve. Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s game against Chelsea, Gravenberch highlighted the role of Heitinga that helped him adjust to the role. He said:

“He showed me a few clips and John – I had him in Ajax so he knows me really well – I had chats with him about good positioning, where the ball can come and also about attacking wise where I have to stand. (So far this season) feels good but to be honest I have to adapt more because I’m not like a natural defending No 6. I was like a more attacking midfielder so for myself I have to adapt more. I think the first games have been really good but I have to keep improving.”

Liverpool signed Gravenberch from Bayern Munich during the summer of 2023 as part of their midfield revamp under Jurgen Klopp. The 22-year-old struggled to receive significant game time while competing with German midfielders Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka at Bayern.

Then-Bayern manager Julian Negelsmann admitted to playing favouritism towards the German players that eventually worked in Liverpool’s favour. Gravenberch struggled with nagging injuries and inconsistency during his first season at Anfield, showcasing glimpses of his talent.

The 22-year-old has a pivotal role to play for the Reds in the coming weeks as the congested fixture period begins. Gravenberch has settled as a defensive midfielder, playing with his strength in a new tactical style of play. The only remaining obstacle for him to fulfil his incredible potential is the level of consistency that he needs to show from here on.
