There is a budding need for a new central defender at L4, as Arne Slot is light on the options in the position. Liverpool did not replace Joel Matip when he left Anfield Stadium in the summer transfer window; however, the problems at the heart of the defence didn’t stop here.

The continual doubts over the availability of Quansah and Joe Gomez contribute to leaving the Reds short of options in the position. Things get more complicated considering the fact that 33-year-old central defender Virgil van Dijk’s contract at the Merseyside-based club comes to a conclusion in less than 12 months.

And looking at the possibility that the Dutch defender might bid adieu to Kirkby, the Reds have been targeting a move to bring German defender Jonathan Tah to Anfield Stadium. The 28-year-old’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen concludes next summer, and he wants to pursue challenges beyond his current employers, and the Reds have expressed interest in bringing him to the English top tier.

Inter makes move for Tah

Liverpool face competition for Tah

Despite Arne Slot & Co. looking to tie the defender at L4, Italian giants Inter Milan have intensified pursuit of the 28-year-old defender, per TeamTALK. The Serie A side have an ageing defender in Francesco Acerbi who is 37, while Stefan de Vrij is 33, and they would like the idea of bringing a highly regarded defender to add to their roster.

Inter have upped the ante in a bid to have Tah sign a pre-agreement with the Italian champions looking to offer a contract till 2029 complemented by a €6 million yearly salary. They have already informed the player and his entourage about the offer via intermediaries.

Liverpool can not only match but also better that salary spectrum given their financial flexibility. It would come down to whether the Reds want his signatures enough.
