Liverpool reclaimed their position on the top of the table as they got the better of Chelsea at Anfield Stadium on a 2-1 score line as a finely taken penalty by Mohamed Salah complemented by a brilliant Curtis Jones finish ensured that Arne Slot’s side claim another set of three points before they visit Arsenal next weekend.
It was a game filled with technical and tactical integrities as the Reds possession focused play earned them a win over the West Londoners looking to cause controlled chaos. The Blues started the game on the upper hand but Salah’s penalty against the run of play meant that the Reds can settle and play their game.
Curtis Jones instrumental in Liverpool win
Chelsea are a finely tuned side under Enzo Maresca, who looked to assert control on the game and their midfield was very integral to ensure that their plan succeeded, however, the Merseysiders midfielder Curtis Jones influenced the middle of the park, broke away and negated the Blues threat as he enjoyed a thunderous performance to give the hosts a big set of three points.
He was involved in both the goals for Merseyside Reds, winning the penalty in first and scoring the second. Although his impact on the game was more than that, he was very important in the visitors midfield rhythm and dictating the tempo of the game.
His ability to combine defensive grind with forward runs ensured that Arne Slot’s side can capitalise on transition situations while exploiting spaces left by the Blues.
What did Slot do?
And Liverpool head coach Arne Slot recognised how important he was to the final result as the Dutchman went straight to his star midfielder after the final whistle, as revealed by John Murray, commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live, who said (via. BBC): “As he heads onto the pitch Arne Slot turns around and heads straight over to Curtis Jones, who was instrumental in Liverpool winning today.”
With this performance, Jones shows how Dominik Szoboszlai should do more from the middle of the park. We haven’t seen the Hungarian put up such grind from the middle of the park, something which is very integral to how the Reds play. It’s time he starts doing so as well.
