Liverpool are enjoying a strong start to the season, with impressive performances across the squad, especially from the pivotal trio driving their success. However, despite this stellar form, certain pundits remain critical, particularly targeting Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defensive abilities. The “Trent can’t defend” narrative, especially from some former Manchester United players, feels increasingly repetitive and doesn’t align with the data.

Roy Keane, discussing Liverpool’s recent win over Chelsea on The Overlap’s Stick to Football, remarked,

“With 10 minutes to go and you’re 2-1 up, taking him off sends a clear message. Yeah, we really trust you defensively.”

However, Liverpool’s decisions have often been about squad rotation, especially with a packed fixture list, rather than singling out any player’s defensive qualities. The focus remains on maintaining momentum and supporting the versatile strengths that have kept Liverpool at the top of the table.

Respected Journalist angered by Keane’s comment

Sky Sports presenter Dougie Critchley recently took to X to challenge Roy Keane’s ongoing critique of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defensive abilities. Critchley pointed out that Keane’s take seems uninformed, particularly considering that Liverpool’s star right-back has been managing some discomfort since returning from international duty. In fairness to Keane, he may not have been aware of the context behind Alexander-Arnold’s recent substitutions. Still, Critchley’s response highlights the need for more nuanced analysis when discussing the performances of top players dealing with minor setbacks.

Earning £180,000 per week, Trent Alexander-Arnold has long been a central figure in Liverpool’s setup, demonstrating both his commitment to the club and his desire to stay for years to come. Despite recent criticism from Roy Keane, the Liverpool native appears unphased, opting not to respond off the pitch. Instead, Alexander-Arnold lets his performances speak for themselves, consistently delivering stellar displays.

A strong start to the season doesn’t guarantee a haul of trophies in the future, but it does support the head coach’s ambition to help Liverpool grow their trophy cabinet in the coming years. Ultimately, it comes down to finances, especially for a generational fullback like Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has redefined his position. It should be an easy decision for Richard Hughes to invest in him.
