Federico Chiesa, whom Liverpool fans hoped would have a dream start at Anfield, has yet to find his feet, sidelined with an injury until the 30th, according to Premier Injuries. So far, Chiesa has logged only 78 minutes on the pitch in a Liverpool shirt.
Italy manager Luciano Spalletti recently publicly stated in DAZN’s coverage of the thrilling Derby d’Italia what it will take for the Liverpool forward and former Juventus star to rejoin the Italy national team, hinting at the high ‘levels’ currently needed to earn a place with the Azzurri.
Since Italy’s disappointing exit from EURO 2024 in the round of 16, Federico Chiesa has not received a national team call-up. Following the tournament, he found himself side lined at Juventus before eventually making a move to Liverpool, where he has yet to establish himself as a first-team regular.
Earning £150,000 per week, Federico Chiesa arrived at Liverpool from Juventus on the deadline day of the summer transfer window. While he was spectacular at Juventus, contributing 55 goals in 131 matches, he has yet to prove his worth at Liverpool under Arne Slot.
What Chiesa needs to do to return to the Azzurri
When asked about the possibility of Federico Chiesa still having a place in the Italy squad, Spalletti responded that it would depend on Chiesa performing at the required level.
“Previously we’ve started with different options, but we’ve relied on individual talent a bit more recently, on players who have the ability to make 70-metre runs,”
“Obviously, these specialist players have to do it at a level that suits our team, if they do it below that level, it becomes a bit more difficult.”

Chiesa must begin playing consistently if he hopes to make his way back into the national team. Spalletti, however, expressed satisfaction with Chiesa and several of his international teammates for choosing to pursue opportunities abroad.
He believes that young players emerging from Primavera teams should strive to gain experience internationally, citing examples like Calafiori and Donnarumma. Spalletti emphasized that such experiences are invaluable for their development and should be pursued by all young talents.
