Liverpool star Joe Gomez proved why he is an extremely reliable defender with his performance against Brighton & Hove Albion. The Reds beat Brighton 2-1 in the Premier League clash at Anfield to return to the top of the table.
The Seagulls surprised the hosts by starting the game strongly and competing effectively with their high-pressing intense style of play. The in-form visitors scored a fantastic goal in the 14th minute of the game from an unstoppable Ferdi Kadioglu shot.
However, Liverpool learnt from the mistake they made against Nottingham Forest in their early season loss and bounced back strongly. Liverpool scored two quick goals in the 70th and 72nd minute of the game through Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.
Brighton’s aggression and the referee’s enabling of their style caused Liverpool a lot of problems in the poor first half. The situation proved more costly just before half-time when French defender Ibrahima Konate got injured from an over-the-top aggressive challenge.
Arne Slot used the halftime to swap Konate with Gomez as the team pushed for a comeback victory at Anfield. Gomez made an immediate impact with a free header early in the second half which Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen saved easily.
The 27-year-old showed impressive reliability in defence, immediately catching up to the speed of the game while threatening in set-pieces. According to Sofascore, Gomez won four out of four duels, made two clearances and one tackle and blocked two shots.
Furthermore, the England international enjoyed 88% passing accuracy from 25 passes and 32 touches against an effectively high-pressing Brighton side. Gomez had two great chances to score his first professional senior-level goal but failed to capitalize on his chances.
