Arne Slot has taken to life in the Premier League like a duck to water. Ten games in, his Liverpool side sit atop the league table, two points better off Man City.

While they deliver on the pitch, it is imperative for the Reds to keep planning in advance behind the scenes and keep the machine well-oiled and operational.

To that end, they are already making plans to move on from a Jürgen Klopp stalwart.

Liverpool line up three men as potential Andy Robertson replacements

Liverpool line up three men as potential Andy Robertson replacements

As per a Mirror report, Liverpool are looking to find long-term replacements for Andy Robertson and have identified David Raum of RB Leipzig, Antonee Robinson of Fulham, and Leif Davis of Ipswich Town as their first three picks.

Robertson has had a tricky start to life under new head coach Arne Slot owing in part to the ankle injury he sustained towards the end of last season, through which he played the 2024 Euros before missing most of the pre-season in order to deal with it. He has made 14 appearances so far this season.

All three aforementioned names linked with the club are starters for their respective sides. Davis, valued by Transfermarkt at €15 million, has a £25k-per-week contract at Portman Road until June 2028. Fulham’s Robinson has a £50k-per-week contract until June 2028, while Raum has a €7.55m-per-year contract at Leipzig until June 2027. Both Raum and Robinson are valued by Transfermarkt at €25 million.

Robertson, who will turn 31 in March, has two more seasons remaining on his £160k-per-week deal.

The time is right

It is not just the fact that Robertson is now in his thirties and showing early signs of decline on the back of a long-term injury, it’s also the fact that Slot wants his fullbacks to rely less on transitions and offer more control while on the ball.

Not that Robertson is the worst on-ball operator, his age, injury, and comparative incompatibility to Slot’s preferences compared to his predecessor’s mean Liverpool have a call to make.

Of course, Robertson will go down in football history as a Liverpool and Premier League great, but all great careers come to an end. Slot’s appointment itself showcases Liverpool’s ability to recognise a need for change and plan accordingly, so while we may see Robertson handed a new contract somewhere down the line, we should also expect a long-term successor to the Scotsman arriving at Anfield sooner rather than later.
