OptaJoe stat revealed how Ryan Gravenberch has dominated in his number six role as Liverpool defeated Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday. The Reds beat the German Bundesliga champions 4-0 at Anfield in the tactical battle between Arne Slot and Xabi Alonso.
Slot deployed Gravenberch in the number six role after Liverpool failed to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad last summer. The new tactical style of play has allowed the 22-year-old to play according to his strength and improve other attributes.
Liverpool and Gravenberch have already passed many tough tests including games against Chelsea, Arsenal, AC Milan and Manchester United. However, Leverkusen posed a different threat after their Invincible dominance last season and a healthy start to their campaign this season.
Leverkusen’s style of play congested the middle spaces and Liverpool fans witnessed that during the first half of the game. The Reds and the German giants fought for dominance in the first half which ended at 0-0 with few chances.
Liverpool changed their style, attacking Leverkusen one-on-one and raising their intensity which allowed them the opportunities to score important goals. Luis Diaz scored a brilliant hat trick while Cody Gakpo continued his fine goalscoring form since his heroics against Brighton.
According to Sofascore, Gravenberch enjoyed 94% passing accuracy with 53 passes and 63 touches involving a 100% long ball accuracy. He created one big chance and made 100% successful dribbles past the opponents while winning five out of six duels.
The Dutch international made two interceptions and four tackles in his all-round display which helped Liverpool keep the clean sheet. According to Opta Joe (Retweeted OptaPlay), Gravenberch has won the most possession (26) than any player in the Champions League.
