Liverpool boss Arne Slot thanked Jurgen Klopp and praised the fans for paying tribute to Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso. The new head coach supervised the Reds to a fantastic 4-0 Anfield victory against Alonso’s last season’s Bundesliga Invincible champions.
Liverpool scored four goals in the second half after a tight tactical battle in the first half between two teams. The Reds have won 14 out of 16 games in all competitions this season, extending their remarkable start under Slot.
Liverpool are at the top of the Champions League and the Premier League table despite not reaching their best performance. There is a lot of room for improvement despite the great start under Slot as the club is still adapting.
However, achieving results despite not reaching anywhere near the peak level is an essential quality for potential Premier League champions. It is still too early to talk about major titles as Liverpool continues to face tough opposition in fixture congestion.
Liverpool will face Aston Villa next in the Premier League showdown at Anfield before heading into the November international break. The Reds return to action after the international break, facing Southampton in an away game followed by a much-anticipated clash with bitter European rivals, Real Madrid.
Speaking to the media (via Daily Mail), Slot thanked Klopp for creating the song that Liverpool fans sang before singing for Alonso. He said:
“It’s always better for a manager that this happens than when they start to boo! It’s special. It was special from the start and, therefore, I think I have to thank Jürgen because he was the one who came up with the song. It is always special if you are a player if they sing for you. Some players get used to this – I didn’t, they only sung a few times for me in my playing career. That’s what you see a bit more [and] people singing for a manager is not that common, at least not in Holland but maybe here it happens a lot.”
Slot delivered a special praise to Alonso for his incredible accomplishments last season with Leverkusen. He added:
“So, it was nice to hear today, but I also like it a lot that after that they sang for Xabi as well because he was so special for this club, so he deserves it for this, but also his achievements at Leverkusen – champions last year, won the cup, played a final in Europe. For all these reasons, he deserved the fans to sing for him as well.”
