Ajax star Jorell Hato could solve the defensive issues that Liverpool are facing on the left side under Arne Slot. The Reds have started the season strongly with formidable defensive performances in all competitions but have recurring issues that persist.
Liverpool have won 15 out of 17 games in all competitions, conceding only 10 goals from those games so far. Their defensive improvement comes through the tactical changes that new head coach Slot has made this season after his appointment.
The Dutchman has emphasized the need to maintain the structure and control of the game, focusing on the risk-reward balance. Despite these advancements, Liverpool’s left side of defence remains an area of concern for several reasons.
Injuries and inconsistent performances from Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are a recurring theme since last season, highlighting the need. Furthermore, Liverpool lacks a left-sided centre-back with captain Virgil van Dijk playing on the left side as the main preference.
The Dutch captain is 33 years of age and needs a long-term solution irrespective of his contract situation. A left-footed centre-back option that suits Slot’s profile could provide much-needed competition to Van Dijk and the left-backs.
According to Graeme Bailey (via CaughtOffside), Liverpool want Hato from Ajax to bolster their left side of the defence. The 18-year-old has played a pivotal role for the Dutch side as they are currently third in the Eredivisie table.
Football journalist Ben Jacobs verified Liverpool’s interest in Hato during his conversation with Forest Fan TV in the summer. He said:
“Liverpool do want a centre-back in that position [left-sided] and it will be a surprise if the window shuts and they don’t get one. They would have loved to bring in Jorrel Hato from Ajax very early in the window and Arsenal were looking at him, too. Liverpool never advanced that, so it was one of those links that never materialised because they felt like the player would stay at Ajax.”
Player Analysis: Jorrel Hato
Hato stands at 1.82 meters and primarily operates as a left-back, though he is equally adept at centre-back. His left-footed precision and tactical awareness make him a valuable asset in both defensive roles, as the 18-year-old defensive prodigy has displayed maturity beyond his years.
In the 2024/25 season, Hato has made 20 appearances across all competitions for Ajax, contributing three goals and four assists. The Dutchman’s defensive prowess is evident with disciplined positioning and timely interceptions to negate the opposition’s advances.
The 18-year-old provides width and support in possession with the capability to deliver accurate crosses and initiate attacks from the back. Hato can easily drop inverted from the left-back position to dictate the tempo and participate in the buildup and possessional play.
Integrating Hato into Liverpool’s squad could address the vulnerabilities on the left side of the defence. Slot prefers a player who can transition naturally into several roles at a particular position which Hato provides.
Hato’s defensive solidity combined with his offensive contributions would provide depth to enhance Liverpool’s resilience against different attacking threats. While Liverpool’s defensive improvements under Arne Slot are commendable, the left side remains a strategic area for reinforcement.
