Liverpool have reportedly identified their ideal replacement for Mohamed Salah if he chooses to leave this summer, with the star being compared to Kylian Mbappé.
Since joining from AS Roma in June 2017, Salah firmly established himself as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history. The Egyptian winger is currently in talks with the club over a new contract, as his current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season.
With rumours swirling that the 32-year-old could be on his way to another club this summer, Liverpool have lined up their ideal replacement for Salah in case he departs. The player in question has caught significant attention.
According to Get French Football News, Liverpool have made inquiries about a potential deal for highly-rated Lyon winger Rayan Cherki, who has had an impressive season with the French club.
Rayan Cherki set for Premier League action
The 21-year-old attracted interest from several clubs last summer and he was available for as little as €10 million due to his contract expiring the following year.
Fulham were among the clubs to enquire about the Frenchman, but he rejected them, as well as Paris Saint-Germain, believing a bid from Borussia Dortmund was imminent. However, Dortmund never formalised their interest, forcing Cherki to remain at Lyon, where he signed a new contract keeping him at the club until the summer of 2026.
Lyon are determined to keep Cherki until at least the end of the season, but if he rejects another contract extension, a transfer seems likely, with Liverpool emerging as one of the front-runners.
Rayan Cherki has registered 47 goal contributions in 152 appearances for Lyon. While his stats may not match Mbappé’s, it is his consistency that draws the comparison to the French superstar. The Frenchman earns £66,780 per week which is set to expand subsequently if he were to join the Reds.
