Food For Thought: Do Liverpool Really Need This Dutch Sensation In The Midfield?

The transfer window may have shut tight at least for the next couple of months, but it has not resulted in any drop in the transfer rumours linking clubs with potential targets. The Premier League just comes on the back of a record-breaking summer in which clubs took their entire spending beyond the £1 billion mark. Leroy Fer has been linked with Liverpool in the past few days, but he has been on the club’s radar for three years. It finally seems like the time has come for the player to secure a move to a big club.

Fer has made an excellent start to the campaign, although he was in the headlines for the wrong reasons following a controversial goal against Chelsea on Sunday. Goalscoring midfielders are hard to come by and Swansea have become the envy of many Premier League clubs as Fer now has three goals in four appearances from the midfield. Rumours may persist about an impending move, but do Liverpool really need the 26-year-old in their squad?

After the arrival of Georginio Wijnaldum for around £25 million, it would seem that Liverpool are sufficiently strong in the centre of the park. The former Newcastle United midfielder, though, has struggled for consistency in their opening four games. Similarly, Jordan Henderson has struggled to apply himself in the defensive midfield position.

In fact, Adam Lallana has been the only central midfielder worth mentioning when it comes to the form at the start of this campaign. Marko Grujic, James Milner, and Lucas Leiva can all strengthen the midfield when called upon. However, the most important player Liverpool are looking forward to welcoming back is Emre Can.

The German has been a big miss defensively, and it seems to suggest that there’s enough creativity in the squad. Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Philippe Coutinho have been so brilliant that Liverpool have even been able to do away with Daniel Sturridge on the substitute’s bench. At this point in time, the addition of another creative midfielder in the form of Fer may make the squad unbalanced.

Further, signing Fer on the back of four games at the start of a new campaign would not be the best business plan. Either way, Liverpool will not be able to bring him before January and revisiting the situation in another couple of months makes sense.
