Georginio Wijnaldum might have joined Liverpool in the summer but he probably didn’t expect to play in central midfield. The former Newcastle star has stated that Jurgen Klopp is not playing him in the best position.

Wijnaldum currently stars in midfield with Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana. But the 25-year-old played as an attacking midfielder for Newcastle United and thinks this is his best position.

The Dutch attacker was quoted by Sky Sports as saying:

“At my previous clubs I was the attacking midfielder who went all the time. Now you have Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson, who can also go all the time, and [James] Milner on the left side, who can also attack.

“I have to look at all the players so that when they go, I stay, and that is the big difference that I have.”

Wijnaldum further stated that he has been playing a little deeper this season but he still has a lot of qualities in him.

“Whereas this season I play a little bit deeper, and you see other qualities like box to box. I am an all-round player, but I still think my best position is as a No 10, although we do not play like that here.”

A bit of a struggle for Wijnaldum

The one big problem for most Liverpool fans is the fact that Wijnaldum has not starred in any of the games this season. The former Newcastle man still has a lot of work to do if he is to win more fans.

One reason why he has struggled is because of this deeper role, which he is unaccustomed to. Another fear for the Liverpool fans is the lack of steel in the midfield. Playing Jordan Henderson as the deepest midfielder is a cause for concern and it only takes one game for the pack of cards to collapse.

There is not one player who will be completing the tough tackles in midfield for the Reds and with Wijnaldum being an attack-minded player, there is no real cover for the Liverpool defence either. The Reds have conceded in every Premier League game this season and it is only a matter of time before Liverpool are found out.

His price tag also caused a few eyebrows to raise given the fact that Newcastle were relegated last season. Although Wijnaldum has started every Premier League game, he only has two assists to his name.

There is also concern about how the midfield will function with the injury picked up by Adam Lallana.

The English midfielder is a major doubt for the Manchester United game and that puts added pressure on Wijnaldum. The Dutchman might finally get a chance to shine for the Reds and what better way to win over the fans than a fantastic display against Manchester United.
