Liverpool are surely one of the best clubs when it comes to the attacking third of the play. But when it comes to the defence, the Reds aren’t the most comfortable club in the Premier League. The Merseyside club have conceded in every game this season (prior to the Manchester United game) and a clean sheet seems to be a bit of a dream in the league.

While the Reds do have a decent pairing of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, they still need quality cover. And with Mamadou Sakho seemingly out of the club, the Reds need a good, young defender sooner rather than later.

There is an answer for this requirement though as the Daily Star have stated that the Premier League club is looking to sign Fabian Schar. The Swiss defender is currently playing for Hoffenheim and has done a decent job since his switch to the Bundesliga.

A target for many top clubs in Europe

It isn’t just Schar who has been a target for the club, even his teammate Nikolas Sule has been linked with a move to Merseyside. Schar though is another rising star in the Bundesliga and bringing him to Anfield would not be the worst move in the world.

The youngster is valued at £9 million and that would be peanuts compared to what is normally paid in the Premier League. Schar was also linked with a move to Arsenal in the summer but the Gunners moved for Shkodran Mustafi, which has turned out to be a decent move as well.

The 24-year-old could certainly do a great job for the Reds but Hoffenheim might not want to lose out on their defender in the winter window. The Reds too aren’t known for making big deals in January; well at least Klopp is not.

A quality defender for the Reds

Even though the Reds might not move for the defender in the winter window, they should keep a tab on him. Schar is certainly built to perform in the Premier League and he has the speed to deal with the fastest attackers in England too.

It only seems like a matter of time before the youngster does move to a bigger team either in Germany or abroad. But Jurgen Klopp is known for his shrewd signings, such as Joel Matip, and the German could well be signing one of the Hoffenheim centre-backs come the start of next season.
