Summer Signing Reveals How Jurgen Klopp Convinced Him To Join Liverpool

Loris Karius has become Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper this season. The German moved to Anfield from Mainz at the start of the season or a fee of £4.7 million and the 23-year-old even kept the first clean sheet of the Premier League season against Manchester United.

The young keeper had made 91 appearances for Mainz before moving to the Premier League and he revealed that a call from Jurgen Klopp was all it to convince him to move to Liverpool. Karius was interviewed by Sport Bild

“He is a big personality everyone listens to.

“He briefly introduced himself [on the phone], and then we had a long chat. I had a good feeling because he’s such pleasant guy.

“We talked about this and that, and I soon realised that we are talking the same language. It was immediately clear to me that I wanted to move to Liverpool.”

The keeper also stated that Klopp has geared his team up to win at the club.

“That’s the way he assembled our squad, with players who are all up for doing great things with Liverpool,” he said.

Not afraid of Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The former Mainz star was also asked what he was afraid of more, the dentist or Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. This was done since Karius’ name was featured in a Norwegian book to help children get used to brushing their teeth.

“It’s definitely the dentist,” Karius said. “Ibrahimovic is certainly a great player, but during a match I don’t waste any thoughts on who is opposing me, and you never have any fears on the pitch.”

Liverpool’s number one

Earlier in the week, Klopp had stated that Karius had replaced Simon Mignolet as the number one keeper at the club. The German keeper though has not looked extremely comfortable between the sticks and some of the same problems with Mignolet had stuck with Loris.

Liverpool have kept just one clean sheet all season in the league and that certainly needs to change. Karius is great when it comes to stopping shots but when he prefers to stay on the line, especially during free-kicks and corners.

The Merseyside club have dealt with this, somewhat, by applying a zonal marking system but even that has not worked always for the Reds. Karius will be hopeful of better performances as the season progresses, he still is young and could be another great signing from Jurgen Klopp.

The German manager’s signings such a Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum and Joel Matip have all done brilliantly and it is time for Karius to step up and be counted.
