One of Liverpool’s most consistent players for the past few years, Nathaniel Clyne, is subject to a lot of interest from the likes of Barcelona and Manchester City. The English defender, who signed for Liverpool in 2014 from Southampton, could be a target for the La Liga giants in January, according to the Express.

Barcelona have struggled to find a replacement for Dani Alves in their right-back slot and have had to use Javier Mascherano at times to plug the huge void left behind. The Catalan club also tried to sign Hector Bellerin earlier but could not convince him to re-join the club from Arsenal.

Clyne has been exceptional for the Reds this season having played in eight games and is the first choice right-back at the club. His consistency and defending abilities are second to none and Barca might be willing to lodge a bid for the £35 million-rated Englishman.

The former Southampton defender is great at attacking too. While he is not a Dani Alves, his energy and crossing are great, meaning the £12.5 million Liverpool paid for the player in 2014 looking like a bargain.

Should Liverpool think about selling the defender?

The simple answer is no. Clyne isn’t just Liverpool’s best right-back, he is one of the best in England and selling him would only signal an intent that the club is willing to let go of their best players. Liverpool did the same for Luis Suarez and that did not work out too well for the Merseyside club.

Clyne is a player that has adapted perfectly to Jurgen Klopp’s playing style at the club and it isn’t a surprise that the Englishman is also thriving in his right-back role. He has adjusted well to the new tactics and is a player that should be first in the team sheet for the club.

Barcelona would certainly be coming hard for the 25-year-old but Liverpool need to hold their nerve. The Catalan club will probably try to lodge a crazy bid for the English defender and while that may seem enticing, it would be hard for the Red to find another player as young as Clyne who is that good.

Liverpool are in a great position this season and it would be a shame if the team is broken down from January onwards. Barcelona might be powerhouses in world football but Jurgen Klopp is no mug and it will be a miracle if the La Liga giants do end up signing Clyne from the Reds.
