One of Lyon’s most promising attackers could be leaving the club on a free transfer and there are a couple of Premier League clubs who are fighting it out for his signature. Rachid Ghezzal, 24, is contracted with the Ligue 1 club till the end of the season and with no headway being made on a new deal, he could be off to Liverpool or Tottenham.
According to reports from Get French Football, the Reds and Lilywhites are interested in the signature of the attacker. It may be worth nothing that the 24-year-old was a target for Everton earlier in the campaign but he decided to stay at Lyon as he found that club was a more interesting option that moving to England.
That might hold him good stead now but Ghezzal hasn’t been in great form this campaign as he only has one goal and one assist to his name. The 24-year-old has played his entire career for the Ligue 1 club and it could be a tough decision for him to leave but he could start negotiating with other clubs from January onwards.
An interesting option for the Reds
Liverpool requires another attacker in the team and the pacy winger would be a great option for them had he been more consistent. The Reds will also lose out on Sadio Mane during the January window due to the African Cup of Nations and Ghezzal too will be in action for Algeria, so moving for him then does not make a lot of sense.
The Reds also have a number of great youngsters coming through the ranks as Ovie Ejaria got his Premier League debut in the 6-1 win over Watford. There are other players such as Sheyi Ojo who could do the job for the Merseyside club in place of Mane.
Even Daniel Sturridge could do a job and he was brilliant in his 20-minute cameo against Watford does provide a great sign of how well he can do in the side. The Englishman did everything he could to try and score and hit the woodwork twice.
His shot also led to Georginio Wijnaldum scoring his first goal for Liverpool and the performance would please Jurgen Klopp a lot. Ghezzal is a tricky winger to have but his lack of form and goals is probably the reason why the Reds should not go for him. Jurgen Klopp has played most of his transfers close to his chest and this too seems to be an attempt to up the stock of Rachid and hopefully secure a big move for the Algerian.
