Liverpool Star Explains Why Klopp’s Team Concede So Many Goals

Liverpool might be sitting pretty on top of the Premier League after 11 games but their defence has been breached a little too often. The Merseyside club features the best attack in the league but they have conceded 14 goals this season, which is the highest in the top seven.

The Reds have kept just one clean sheet in the league and their goalkeeper, Loris Karius, has revealed why the Premier League leaders have conceded so many goals. Speaking to the Liverpool Echo

, the former Mainz goalkeeper said:

“Sometimes we’re a bit disappointed that we didn’t get as many clean sheets yet as we maybe wanted but we’ve a very aggressive style of play, very high positions, sometimes that’s the risk you take.

“Maybe one counter-attack or whatever, or a set piece, can lead to a goal, but if you look at it in total when you win 6-1 it could be worse!”

A replacement for Mignolet

Karius was made the number one at Liverpool by Klopp and replaced Simon Mignolet for that role. The Belgian did not take this lightly and stated that he would be fighting to reclaim the position from Karius.

The former Mainz goalkeeper has had a few shaky moments but his performance against Watford in the 6-1 win was probably his best, even though he could not keep a clean sheet. Karius wanted to assure fans that he will be doing better in the upcoming matches.

“I think the problem was more that in the first games, there was really nothing for me to do as in saves, so when I made maybe a bad pass or missed one cross or something, it was looked at very critically because this was the only stuff to be looked at.

“In a game where you maybe have three or four good saves, that’s something people don’t really talk about that much.

“For me, it’s clear that I don’t want to make any little mistakes so there’s always stuff to improve, but I don’t remember making an error leading to a goal or whatever.”

The Reds will be facing a tough Southampton side at St Mary’s on Saturday and a win for Klopp’s men would ensure another week on top of the Premier League table. Southampton will have the bit between their teeth as many of the players for the Merseyside club were away on international duty and with Adam Lallana also a major doubt, the Saints will be looking to cause an upset.
