Liverpool Legend In Line To Take The Managerial Post At MK Dons

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard’s time in the United States has come to an end and the midfielder is all set to make a return to England. While Liverpool fans are hoping that the 36-year-old does re-join the side in any sort of capacity, reports are emerging that the 2005 Champions League winner will be signing up with MK Dons.

The BBC reports that the League One club do not have a manager at the moment and Gerrard would be looking to succeed Karl Robinson. The 36-year-old does not have a lot of experience coaching but this could be the right job for him, given that many believe he will be a Liverpool manager soon.

MK Dons aren’t doing all that well at the moment and lie 21^st in the league and maybe this signing could push them up the league.

Unsure about role for the Liverpool legend

While leaving the United States, Gerrard had stated that he needs time to decide his future. The former Liverpool captain could still play a few more years but he did struggle in the MLS, which does not bode well for him.

Liverpool could do with more quality in the side to continue their charge for a first ever Premier League title but Gerrard would not be the best person to have purely from a playing point of view. He is not as quick as he used to be and would struggle in the top level of English football. This could be one reason why he wants to join at a lower level to see just how well he does.

Alternatively, this could be the perfect stepping stone for the Liverpool legend into management. The Englishman doesn’t have a lot of experience in coaching and MK Dons do have a history of bringing in high profile names to the club.

They had Roberto di Matteo as a manager earlier and even Robinson was only 29-years of age when he took over the job at the club.

Will this work out for Gerrard?

The intentions might be noble from both sides but this does look like a disaster in the making. The Dons aren’t in a great position and should not be looking to fool around or they could face the ignominy of relegation.

If Gerrard does not go well, it would certainly harm his chances of taking up a better job in the future. What the former Liverpool star should think about doing is take up a coaching role but not that of the head coach or manager and earn his stripes. The Liverpool job is still a few years away but he could do the backroom staff job at the Reds too, his experience would be handy for a young Liverpool side and they could win the competition with him in the side.
