Gerrard

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is all set to join the Premier League club in a coaching role according to the Telegraph. The 36-year-old had retired from all forms of the game after his stint with the LA Galaxy and it was expected that he would join MK Dons as the manager of the League One side.

That option didn’t work out for Gerrard and he is set to now join the youth team in a coaching role. The former Liverpool star was also linked with a move to Scottish giants Celtic, in a player-coaching role under Brendan Rodgers but even that did not see the light of day.

Gerrard working on his coaching licenses

If the Englishman does want to manage Liverpool sometime in the future, he will have to work on his UEFA licenses. Moving to the Premier League club will give him time to focus on earning those badges and the former captain of the side is still working on his “A” license.

Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager has consistently stated that he would be open to Gerrard joining the side in a coaching capacity but he did not want to put too much pressure on his side as there are more negotiations to take place.

“The door is always open for him. From our side if he wants to make a rich career after his (playing) career we want to help him,” said Klopp. “It is clear that one day in the future there will be something to announce.”

A great situation for Liverpool and Gerrard

Gerrard joining the academy would be a win-win situation for both parties involved. The youngsters at the club would learn a lot from a role model like Gerrard, while the former captain can stay in touch with the happenings of the club and also work with a brilliant manager like Jurgen Klopp and pick up a few pointers from the German.

“In the future I definitely have dreams and aspirations of having a go at management or assisting the manager and being back involved in the dressing room but I’ve got many, many years to do that,” said Gerrard in an interview on BT Sport.

“I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be.”

It only is a matter of time before the news becomes official and if Gerrard does stick around at the club for a long time, he will certainly be in the running for the top job sooner rather than later.
